We're going to be grandparents again in February. The baby is due Feb 29th - Leap Day! Isaac will be a "big" brother! LOL We find out 9/22 whether we're having a grandson or a granddaughter. I've been knitting while I've been waiting...do you think I'm doing a little wishful thinking? I made a bunch of sloppy joes/coney sauce and put it in the freezer. I made a pie from scratch from the peaches; Rich said it was the best peach pie he's ever eaten.

We've been busy with this season's Civil War reenactments. We went to the 150th anniversary of First Manassas. Being there on the actual date when the battle occurred was an amazing feeling. We toured the battlefield and the surrounding areas where the fighting was done. It was pretty humbling to be there walking the same ground where so many of those brave soldiers died.

Well, back to working on my handmade items for Christmas presents. Finished sewing on his Corporal's chevrons. I bought the sack coat kit and chevrons from Wambaugh and White. The pieces for the coat are cut out and sent to you with instructions, thread, and beeswax. It was a challenge, but I think it turned out pretty well for my first sack coat. Every stitch was handsewn. There are a few places I would have liked to have laid a little flatter, etc., but I'm overall pretty pleased.

Civil War Chemise

I just finished this project, which is a chemise. It's from a book called The Dressmaker's Guide 1840-1865 by Elizabeth Stewart Clark. If you are a woman interested in Civil War clothing, it is a must-have! Here is a picture of the chemise I made:

Now I'm working on a pair of underdrawers. It was in the high 90's and very, very humid. Dakota went with us. It was a challenge trying to stay cool and keep hydrated. By Saturday evening, we all had headaches and were getting dehydrated, so we went to town and ate at Pizza Hut just to get out of the heat for a little while. We felt much better when we left there. There was a storm coming in when we left Pizza Hut, and by the time that we got back to Billie Creek Village, it was raining. It actually felt good to walk in the rain back to the camp, and I had my work dress on, so it wasn't a big deal. We couldn't decide whether or not to go to the ball, because we were all so tired from the heat. We finally decided to go and watch. Dakota and I entered the gown competition with our dresses. Dakota was wearing this dress (although this photo was taken at Conner Prairie).I was wearing this dress, and I won!

I got a certificate of appreciation. It was very cool! It would have been even more cool if I had made the dress myself, but I will get there one of these days.

Last weekend we attended an event at the Hesston Steam Train Museum in LaPorte, IN. We had lots of produce...green beans, tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, cucumbers, onions, basil...The broccoli didn't do well, nor did the corn, but we were overjoyed with the success of this project. The only problem was that we had just more than we could eat, but not enough to can (tomatoes or green beans), and I didn't have enough cucumbers to make pickles. So we'd like to try to expand next year. I did take pictures, but I've saved everything to disk to free up some computer space...and I don't want to take the time to hunt for the disc this morning. (sorry)

I am currently on medical leave from work. I had to have a hysterectomy. Pathology all came back showing nothing cancerous, so I'm thankful. I wasn't worried about that so much as just having all of the pain I was having. I'm glad it's over. A big thank you to Dr. Fish for fixing me!!! It's back to work in 4 weeks, but in the meantime I'm getting caught up on some nursing journal reading, and studying for the certification exam for SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner). I take it right before I go back to work. I also have to plan a baby shower for right before I go back to work...
Baby Isaac is growing like crazy! This picture is actually from 8/9/09. He's much bigger now! Only 10 weeks from yesterday and he will be here! Chey is feeling good...just tired a lot, which is understandable. I remember those days! Ha!

I've knitted him some cotton bibs, a jacket and pants set, and a gown. I'll try to post pictures of those before the week is out. I'm working on trying to finish up a sweater today (for me). I've had to rip it out twice, so I'm ready to be done with it! It's a mock cable pattern, and I'm tired of the same stitch and ready to move on to something else. I'll have plenty of opportunity. I've joined an email group of Civil War needleworkers. I'm finding lots of patterns and information to use to take with me to knit at re-enactments. On that note, back to it!

Happy knitting all!

Now the wait begins...

Well, we got the rest of the raised garden beds done. We planted seeds in the first bed a couple of weeks ago. Last week we finished putting dirt in the other 2 bigger beds, and last Sunday after church we planted the rest of our seeds. We also went ahead and planted our tomato plants, bell pepper plants, onions, garlic, and jalapeno pepper plants. I'm working on a baby gown right now. I'll post pictures of it when I'm done. Well...that's about it for today. The bus just pulled up, so Kota is home. Rich will be home soon, so I need to start thinking about dinner. I think it's going to be some of EZ's "longies" or baby leggings and another BSJ to match.

Rich hasn't been getting a full work-week because of the economical downturn. We're limping along budget-wise, but hanging in there. I'm sure glad that we started Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace program when we did. We've paid off several debts so far, but we still have a ways to go. Rich thinks things are going to pick up soon where he works, so hopefully we'll be able to start paying extra on debts again soon and get even more paid off. We are trying to live as frugally as possible. We haven't been successful in trying to get vegetables to grow in the clay soil we have here at home. We've tried multiple times. So this year we decided to build raised garden beds. To save money, we used 8-10" diameter cedar trees for the sides of the beds and then used 2x8's for the ends to hold the logs together. The beds are 4 feet across so that I can reach them from either side to weed, pick things, etc.
The smaller one in the back is a strawberry bed. I can't wait for fresh strawberries next year! We bought some dirt that was $20 per truckload and mixed in some "miracle grow" style enriched garden soil with fertilizer, and some manure. I invested in a $15 soil tester, and the numbers look pretty good. I think this might work really good! We are planning to do "square foot gardening" and "companion planting" - putting plants together that benefit each other. We're going to try growing green beans, cucumbers, peas, sweet corn, leaf lettuce, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers for salsa, and tomatoes. Then we're going to try to put some small cantaloupe, pumpkins, and watermelon in the ground to see if we can get them to grow. I'd really like to make some pumpkin butter and freeze some pumpkin for pies. Our apple trees are growing...hopefully one day we'll have apples for apple butter. Our dwarf peach tree is doing well, and we planted another one last year. We won't get peaches off of it for another couple of years probably, but I can't wait to have peaches. Next year we're planning on building a chicken house so we can raise our own eggs. We're thinking of raising some rabbits for meat, too. We have a rabbit hutch. That would help to supplement the deer meat we have each year.

Rich is as handsome as ever...although beginning to get a few gray hairs in the mustache and sideburns. You can't see his gray like you can in my hair (thank goodness for Loreal! LOL). Our 20th wedding anniversary is this September - I can't believe it's been 20 years already. Seems like just yesterday we were getting married! As they say...time flies when you're having fun!

Dakota is doing great...she's a beautiful young lady. She's a freshman, and I know she will be graduating high school before it seems possible. Time sure flies. She has a boyfriend right now named Anthony. He seems to be a good kid. She's not allowed to "date" yet, but he comes out and plays video games, goes to church with us sometimes, etc.
I got baptized on February 22nd in my new church. Although I was raised in the Nazarene church, I've found a new home in a small, country, Lutheran church. I really like it. The pastor is great, as are the members. Rich has been going with me nearly every Sunday (YEAH!!!), and Dakota is going more frequently all the time. We went to the sunrise service on Easter. They are starting a new bible study tonight, using The Shack. I'm going. I think it will be very interesting.

I also just completed a 3 month course as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). Completing the course makes me a forensic nurse examiner for our hospital. I will take the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner certification exam this Fall. I'm spending a lot of time right now getting our hospital's SANE program up and running. I was our hospital's first Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and I hope to become their first SANE. It is very fulfilling nursing work. I've completed 5 cases now, and each one has made me more glad that I invested the time in the course and this program.

I took an ABATE riding class and learned how to operate my own motorcycle. I am the proud owner of a used Harley Davidson Sportster 1200. It is soooo fun to ride! It's cold and rainy outside today so I don't want to get it out. Here is a picture of it...I'll post another one once I can get it out in the sunlight.
I also asked for quilting supplies for Christmas 2008. I'm hoping to get back to it soon, but right now, my priority is knitting baby clothes.

Well, I need to get working on some things here at home, work on the SANE policy for work, KNIT BABY STUFF, and re-read my chapters for the bible study tonight.

Lots going on

There have been a ton of things going on...the oldest daughter moved out shortly after my last post (and shortly after her 18th birthday). She did it against my advice, but she's of age, so I can't stop her, so I guess I'll just have to accept it and move on. I had to give up working at the open heart unit because it was taking too much time away from the youngest daughter...now that she's the only child I have living at home, I want to spend as much time with her as possible. She's lost a lot of weight, and I'm more than a little worried about her. My wonderful hubby is enjoying the warm weather, and both of us love the fact that we can ride the motorcycle again...we love the time alone together. In true "biker" style, I've gotten some new body art...
I shocked the crap out of a lot of people by getting a tattoo...but I really like it. I looked for a long time to find just the one I wanted...the heart represents my valentine birthday and all of the people, both here and gone, that I love. The flowers represent the fact that I love the outdoors, and the fact that I love to "stop and smell the roses" in my busy life. Well, I need to get busy knitting on my mom's Mother's Day gift....sorry mom...no hints here! :)

Time...

....a funny thing. If it doesn't naturally get away from you fast enough (as evidenced by the fact that I haven't blogged since the middle of August and it's now Mid-March), the government makes you lose an extra hour on top of it all (I still hate daylight savings time!). DD#1 is getting ready to turn 18, DD#2 is getting ready to turn 14, and I am now officially on the brink of 40. My best friend (also known as my wonderful, loving husband) is just as awesome as ever! I love that I can still say that after nearly 19 years!!!Well, let's see...a lot has happened since I blogged last. I gave up my job as the ED Manager in November (I'd hated it for months, but wanted to give it a fair chance). I had initially turned down the interview in the Cardiovascular Unit (CVU) at a nearby hospital, but once I went back to being a staff nurse in the ED (ER), I contacted the CVU again, and I'm now working there one day a week or so. I love it! I've been sick since Friday with the flu (I insanely thought that I was going to escape that bullet this year), missed work in the ER all weekend, and am off today. I'm going to be working on my hemodynamic monitoring knowledge. I've never gotten to experience arterial lines and "fancy" hemodynamic monitoring in the ER, since my ER is smaller. I say "fancy" hemodynamic monitoring, because in an ER where you don't place central lines and arterial lines, your hemodynamic monitoring consists of using parameters such as the patient's heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, capillary refill, level of consciousness, etc. instead of all of the fancy numbers like the central venous pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, etc. I'm just learning more and more...and loving every minute of it! I've helped take care of a fresh open heart patient just coming back to the room from the OR, and helped take care of patients getting ready to go to have their open heart. It's totally awesome! I feel like a nurse again! I like the ER because of the variety of things I see/experience, but I really love the CVU. I see myself having to make a choice one of these days (when my body says I can't work as much)...but until then, I'm going to do both for a while! :)

I finally got mad enough at the debt we have amassed, that I put us on a strict budget. We now have a plan for getting out of debt and should still have time to put back some money for retirement afterward. I'm really looking forward to being completely out of debt in 7-10 years. I know a lot of things can happen between now and then, but at least we have a plan now instead of continuing to flounder in a sea of debt and still racking up more debt in the process.

As for knitting, I have completed several projects since I last blogged. I've joined Ravelry, and am trying to put my projects up on there. I just finished an EZ Baby Surprise Jacket (although I still have to put buttons on it), I made a hat to go with it..... (Knitpicks Swish worsted weight in Delft Heather)

I've made the hubby two pairs of socks (Knitpicks Fellici in Coastal),

I finished a Hoosier dishcloth and hanging towel (pattern here), made a couple of two-color patterned hats out of EZ's Knitting Workshop book, and made a sweater to match one of them, which I gave to DD#1 for Christmas. DD#2 was the recipient of the 2nd hat, but I haven't had time to make the matching sweater yet. Given the state of DD#1's room, I'm not even going to try to find them. DD#2 is so obsessive/compulsive that she'll know if I move a single thing in her room trying to find the hat, so I think I'll wait on taking a picture of that until she gets home and can get it for me. I'm currently working on a pair of socks (Apple Laine in colorway Blue Bayou, purchased from Wool-Tyme in Canada). I actually purchased this wool about 2 years ago and am just now getting to knitting it from the stash. I also have another colorway...Best Friends...it's a blue based colorway, whereas this is more of a brown-based.

(supposedly for me, but I'll probably end up giving them away for an upcoming holiday if I don't get another pair made before then). I don't know whether my handmade socks are actually worn by my mom, or if they're just sitting in her drawer...but I like giving them to her anyway. :)

The sheep venture is out of the question...at least for now. I will settle for buying fleece. :) My wonderful hubby got me a gift certificate for my favorite LYS for Christmas, and I used it to buy two lovely Shetland fleeces. I've handwashed the dark brown, and am handcarding it. It's slow going, but I love doing it. I've gotten 3 skeins of yarn done now,

and I'm eager to get the rest of it done, so that I can knit myself a new jacket...I think I'm going to make the Bog Jacket out of EZ's Knitting Around. I bought the DVD from Schoolhouse to go with the book, and I love them! I have some white Shetland roving from a fleece that I bought at Sheepstreet a couple of years ago. I think I'll use that in combination with the dark brown that I'm working on now for the jacket. If I have enough left over, and I think I should, I'll make a hat and mittens to go along with it. :) I doubt if I get any wool carded today. I hate carding it in the house, because it has quite a bit of vegetable matter (VM) in it, and it makes a mess. It's much better if I can card it outside. We actually had a day in the 60's a week ago...the gorgeous hubby took me on a motorcycle ride, and then I came home, sat on the deck, drank a beer, and carded wool. Now that's my idea of relaxing! This weekend, however, we got 10-12 inches of snow! It's supposed to be in the mid-50's by the middle of the week, though, so maybe I'll get to card some wool later in the week.

The second fleece I bought with the gift certificate for Sheepstreet is an oatmeal color. I may end up sending it off to be processed, depending on how much vegetable matter it has in it when I look at it again. I like carding it myself, but I also get frustrated with the high VM because I can't get it out as much as I'd like. Sheepstreet has changed to a new hay for feeding the sheep since these fleeces were sheared, so the VM content should be less. They will be shearing again in April, and I want to try to buy another fleece or two.

I also took a handpainting yarn class at Sheepstreet, as well as a spinning class. I just love the folks at Sheepstreet...Nancy, Tim, and Pat...You're the best! Here is my first ever handpainted yarn - a sock yarn that I call "American Pride" :)

Finally, I dove into my first cables...trying them out on a scarf and hat of my own design. I like them, but I definitely need to make the outer pattern on the scarf in something that doesn't curl...perhaps a garter stitched edge with the cables more in the middle. But hey... a learning project! :)
Well, since I want to spin later (my reward for studying hemodynamic monitoring), I need to get to studying.

My How Time Flies!

I can't believe it's been a (little over) a month since I've blogged! Time is flying by. It will be Christmas before I know it, and I've just barely started making gifts! I've been working a ton, too, though, as we have 21 night shifts open, and day shift is short several days, as well. I've been asked to interview for the Cardiovascular Unit at another hospital. I'm considering it very much. I have a new dishwasher arriving this week, as GE notified me that our existing one has some defect that makes it a fire hazard if you've used rinse aids in it (which I have). It was either a free service call or $150 towards the purchase of a new one (duh...it's a 6 year old dishwasher!).

Well, I'm off to the grocery store before it gets to the 95 degree mark today. And then it's back home so I can wash down the house and dream about owing one of these:

More about that next time! :)

Time for some catching up!

I finally had time to take some project pictures, so get ready for some serious catching up!

Desert Poncho - The Desert Poncho is about finished. I ran out of the Mocha Lion Suede as I was binding off the final row. I went to several local stores where I had seen the yarn over the past several months, and none could be found, so I found some online. I'm ready to finish the bind-off and then do the fringe, and it will be done. I wanted to make this poncho a "little big" because I want to wear it on cool evenings in the fall and spring when we're camping or sitting outside. Ummm...can I just say that it's "definitely big". I will have no trouble with it being long enough to really keep me warm! It's almost a dress! Another lesson in checking gauge for me!

The Fiber Trends Lace Leaf Shawl is finished, and I've given it to my friend Jill as a wedding gift. It was my first true attempt at a lace project (and blocking), and I'm very happy with the outcome.

Garter Ridge Cardi
I've also made good progress on my first cardigan that I've mentioned in previous postings. It's made out of the same yarn as the Lace Leaf Shawl...just in different colors. I've completed the back and both sides and have them sewn together. I'm going to have to take one side off and resew it, though....the pattern doesn't match up exactly on that side, and it's very distracting when you're looking at it. I'm about half done with the first sleeve. After the sleeves are done and sewn on, it will be time to sew on the border around the neck and the front, and do the buttonholes and buttons (another first for me). Here are pictures of the progress so far on the cardi and a picture of the detail of the pattern:

The pattern is easy, and it really looks nice. I'd like to try it again with some of my homespun sometime for a winter-weight cardigan. This particular cardi is going to be very light-weight for spring (hence the yellow and green, which remind me of my daffodils that I can't wait to see coming up every spring!).

A new hobby that hit me out of the "blue"
My hubby and I recently attended a civil war re-enactment. Mind you, I've always felt like I was born in the wrong century, but I now have an outlet for that! We're going to be participants in the re-enactments! We joined a local group of local Northern recruits, and I can't wait to get started! The hubby's clothes can all be purchased for a reasonable price, but buying mine pre-made would be very, VERY pricey...so....I'm learning to sew. So far I've made my pantalettes (bloomers), a chemise ("shimmy") and a petticoat to go over my hoops, so they won't show through my dress. I did go ahead and purchase a set of hoops and a corset, because I'm not sure that my sewing skills are up to boning or stays yet. I also have purchased the pattern for my bodice and skirt, so I'll be starting on them before long. My momma was wonderful help in getting the petticoat pinned up to the proper length for hemming so that it doesn't show underneath my skirts (Thanks Mom!). Being a civilian while the hubby is fighting the battles will be fun (and hot with all of those layers of clothes!), but I'm also looking forward to the dances and good times that the groups have after hours when they all get together. I've always been fascinated with the Civil War, so this is a perfect fit. Unfortunately, it also means that I will have to leave my metal knitting needles at home and remember to grab the wooden ones so that I can stay in character!

Well, that's about all of the updates I have for today. Back to laundry, picking some wild blackberries & raspberries for freezing (or a pie), and working on finishing up the current knitting projects. I think Sunday (tomorrow) may even be a day for spinning!

Lace Leaf Shawl

Well, the lace leaf shawl is done and I'm blocking it. Between long work hours, graduation, getting the DD a new (used) car to replace her totaled one, I just haven't had much time lately. I'm working on the lace-leaf shawl pattern from Fiber Trends. I had to take a break from working on my cardi because my friend (who the lace-leaf shawl is for) is getting married in August...and her shower is tomorrow...and the shawl is not finished. I had another late night at work today, so I'll have to try to work on it this weekend. She knows she's getting it, and she knows it will be late. YEA!!!! I've been working on my Garter Ridge Cardi..I'm waiting on my camera batteries to charge so that I can take a picture of it and post it. I've been working on the house, trying to actually clean. I've been spot cleaning and depending on my daughters for help for so long during school, that I am really enjoying thoroughly cleaning my house! So I've not been knitting as much as I'd like, but definitely more than I was able to a few weeks ago. It's nice to be able to sit down, pop in an audiobook, and knit in peace (i.e. without having to feel guilty that I'm not getting homework done!). I'm already planning my next project after the cardi is done...it will be a lace shawl (my first attempt). Hopefully I can pop in Hobby Lobby and pick up another skein of Lion Suede tomorrow so that I can finish my Desert Poncho this weekend, too. Then I can get pictures of it posted. Maybe my Mom will model it for me while she's here for a visit!

I actually filled my birdfeeder with seed, and filled my hummingbird feeders the other day...poor birds probably thought I'd dropped off the face of the planet over the past couple of years! I'd be sitting out on the deck enjoying watching them right now, if I weren't working on dinner as I type this. I can't wait to plant flowers and go camping and go fishing and....oh....sorry...I got a bit excited there for a minute thinking about all of the things I've missed so much! Especially spending time with my family; that has been my first priority for the last week that I haven't had any homework. It's so wonderful being able to spend time with them. I'm even caught up on my daily devotionals for the first time in a long time... :)

OK...the camera batteries are charged...Here is my progress on the cardi...

The second picture is a closeup of the garter stitching (every 6th row is a pearl row) and the edging. I'm doing the borders in yellow to give it a "springy" look. This will be my first attempt at doing anything with button holes. I'm about an inch away from finishing the back and then I'll be ready to start on the front sides. I have some old, old buttons in a button box that was my Aunt Mary's...I played with all those buttons as a child. It'll be nice if I can find enough of one kind to do the buttons on this project.

Well, I'm sure that my loving hubby will be in any minute with some delicious grilled pork chops. I need to get the eggs peeled and get the rest of the dinner together.

Working on a new project

I'm working on the Garter Ridge Cardi on page 20 of the May 2006 issue of Creative Knitting. I also bought a new pattern today from my friend Dani at Knitty Paws, along with some yarn to make it with. The pattern is for the Fiber Trends' Leaf Lace Shawl and the yarn is Maggi's Linen - I chose the natural color so that I could wear it with more when I'm finished. Dani has already started making one in another color, and it's going to be gorgeous. This is my present to myself for another special surprise that I got today! My college called me today to let me know that I have been selected as the Chancellor's Scholar Award winner from the local campus for this year; that means that I have the highest GPA of anyone graduating this May!!! I can't believe it! Speaking of I can't believe it, I have GOT to get off of here and study, or they may take my award away due to my Chemistry grades (note the knitting lying on TOP of the Chemistry text - which I am working on studying to prepare for Monday's exam...really!) :)

Mock Cable Sock Progress

Well, I did find some time to knit last night, after working very diligently on my Chemistry all day. Here's what one of them looks like so far. I think I like the self-striping yarn for the heel. It brings out the color flecks in the rest of the sock. I had problems getting the heels started on my circulars, so I ended up taking this sock off, working on the heel, and will do the same with the second sock - putting them back on two circulars once I get to the point where I'm just knitting 'round and 'round again. I'm not sure where I messed up while trying to start the heels with both socks on circulars, but that's OK...it's been a while since I've knit socks on DPNs anyway (since I learned to do 2 socks on 2 circs).

Oh, by the way...here is my 5 month old Boston Terrier, Piper Ann. She is the second Boston Terrier rescue we've had. She's smart as a whip, spoiled rotten, and a case in point of why Boston Terriers are often nicknamed Boston Terrorists! She's a handful (but in a good way). Our other Boston Terrior, Wilma, is 10 years old and getting pretty arthritic. We also have a 2 1/2 year old Miniature Pinscher named CJ.

Heck...might as well put in a picture of them, too. There's never a dull moment around here with two of them chasing each other constantly. Wilma sometimes joins in, depending on how she's feeling. There is definitely some sibling rivalry going on...you can't have one of them on your lap unless you want all three...makes knitting difficult at times, unless there is someone else sitting there to help give some attention out.
Well, back to Chemistry, laundry, and working on my socks!

A late birthday gift...

My present to myself - Elizabeth Zimmerman's "Knitting Workshop" DVD and book - arrived in the mail yesterday. I'm diligently working on homework right now so that hopefully I can spend some time looking at it today. I knitted for an hour or so on my mock cable socks last night while watching a movie after dinner with my DH and DDs. I'm about ready to start the heel flaps; (I'll put up a picture of my progress so far once my camera batteries are charged). They are made from Knit Picks' Bare - Superwash/Nylon/Donegal Fingering Weight yarn. It's the first time I've used it, and I really like it. I think I'm going to use some of my leftover self-striping yarn for the heels and toes...just to see what it looks like. I may end up frogging those parts if I don't like how it turns out.

I haven't touched my Desert Poncho for a couple of weeks - and probably won't for another couple of weeks, at least. It may be Spring Break before I can work on it again. As long as I have it finished in time for the County Fair, that's my goal. DH is going ice fishing, DD #1 is going to work at 5 pm, and DD #2 is watching Piper Ann (our 5 month old Boston Terrier puppy - another rescue). I'm off to try to get the homework finished so I can try to knit on the socks while I'm studying for an exam (re-reading notes is much more pleasant when one has a knitting project in hand!).

Happy Valentines Day/Birthday To Me!

My loving hubby did so well today! He got me a Yarn Meter, so that I can figure out just exactly how much leftover sock yarn I have (dare I start another pair) and how much homespun I have created; he bought me the Yarn Harlot (Stephanie Pearl McPhee)'s Knitting Rules book, AND he had Dairy Queen make me an ice cream cake and pipe an icing ball of yarn onto the top - all in my favorite color of purple! :) It's no wonder that man is the love of my life! He's so sweet! I wasn't able to get a picture of the cake before it was cut, so I'm out of luck on that one. I also got in the mail from Wool-Tyme my 4 skeins of Apple Pie yarn. I've heard that it's wonderful for socks - very soft, yet durable. I can't wait to knit it up. Unfortunately, my Chemistry homework has to be caught up first, and I have to finish the current socks I'm working on, so that I can have my size 3 needles! I'll get a picture of the socks currently in progress up within the next day or so.

My friend Susie gave me a Gooseberry Patch cookbook, some fried apples, and some honey from Cracker Barrell (YUM!). Thanks Susie! She (also as my boss), said I should plan to take tomorrow off, too! YEAH! I have some leftover yarn that I'm going to use in the heels and toes, along with the Donegal yarn from Knitpicks. I'm not sure exactly how much of each type of leftover sock yarn I have, so I can't wait to get my present from my hubby - a yarn meter (also coming from Knitpicks)! :)

I'm still here...

I haven't posted in a while, but I'm still here. I've been knitting, but not spinning. Still anxious for school to be over with so that I can spin and knit much more! I'm starting on my last semester of school today - YEAH! I've also become the manager of the Emergency Department, so my time is a bit busier because of that. Since my last post, I've completed several projects, which I neglected to take pictures of. I knitted a sweater for my mom (off white with country-rose colored stripes, neck, and cuffs), cotton wash cloths in a feather and fan pattern for my nieces and my friend, Vicki, green socks in Shetland wool for my mother-in-law...I think that's it. Right now I've got two projects on the needles. A Desert Poncho from Lionbrand (my fair project for 2007) and a pair of socks for myself (an actual pair of socks for ME!). I will try to get pictures of their progress up in the next few days. I'm sure the progress will slow way down now that school is back in session. But I'm almost done!!!

Fair Project Results

I know...I know...it's been a month since I last posted. School started again for me, and I just haven't gotten around to it. My projects did well at the fair. Although I didn't get a Grand Chamption or Reserve Grand Champion, I did get two first place ribbons. My neck-down sweater got a first place.
My mittens got a first place...and my butterfly shawl got a third place. The judges didn't make any comments on my cards, so I'm not sure what they didn't like (or liked less) about the butterfly shawl. I already have my project for next year in mind, so I just need to come up with the $90 for the yarn because it's something that I can't spin myself...especially with classes going on. I'm counting the months until I'm done with that.

In the couple of weeks between the end of summer classes and the beginning of fall classes, I managed to finish two pairs of socks (each pair worked at once on two circulars). I really like working two socks at once on two circulars...they seem to fly! The only thing I don't like as well is the short-row heel instead of the gusseted heel; it's a good trade-off, though. I'll try to get pictures of these pairs of socks posted this weekend.

Well, back to fixing dinner and reading homework.

It's nailbiting time....

Well, I did it.... I just got home from putting 3 of my handknit items in the fair. It would have been 4, but the local fair doesn't have a category in which my finest skein of handspun alpaca could go (sigh). I suggested that they might want to think about it, as spinning is making a comeback and the State Fair has a category for it. Hmmm...Now that I think about it, I probably shouldn't have said anything like that until after my pieces were judged! Just kidding! :)

Anyway, I entered my butterfly shawl and my white top-down sweater that I finished last month. I also entered a pair of mittens, which I now see that I neglected to take a picture of when I got them finished. I'll have to try to remedy that when I get them back next week. Hopefully I will at least get a "well done" ribbon, even if my beginner's skills aren't good enough to take 1st place. I'd be happy with that...especially since this is my first ever entry into a fair!

I also have some new interchangeable needles that I LOVE! They're similar to the Addi Turbo needles in that they're nickle-plated brass and very fast to knit with, but they're much less expensive and have a great feel to them when I'm knitting with them...very comfortable. They're from KnitPicks and they're called "Knit Picks Options" needles. They're wonderful!

I also attended Dani's first ever Fiber Fest and Dye Day at Knitty Paws. It was wonderful! I bought some yarn (in conjunction with my friend Rachel) to knit a baby blanket for our friend Lisa. We're using different patterns for each square and doing it in pastel colors. At the end, we'll put them all together and see what we have! I think it's going to turn out great! Oh...and CONGRATULATIONS to Dani on winning two ribbons at her local fair! You can see her award winning projects on the Knitty Paws website.

On the needles now? Well...the baby blanket squares, a pair of socks on two circulars, and the blue top-down sweater I have already put pictures of on here. The sweater is finished except for the sleeves. I have some repair work to do on the sleeve I almost have finished because I dropped some stitches trying to knit in the dark at my in-laws' house last weekend (I know...it would help if I took the time to get up and move to where the light is when we're at a cookout...I just didn't want to get too close to the fire and end up getting a hot ash in my fiber!).

Well, as much as I wish I could say I'm going to go knit, I have yet another paper to write for class. I'm still longing for the day when I can come home and spin and knit to my little heart's content!

On the needles now?

Another top down sweater! This one is for a Christmas gift...but I can't tell you who for because lots of my family members read my blog! I'm getting together with a couple of friends (Hi, Rachel & Ann!) on Friday to teach them how to do the top-down sweater, so I'll have a good chance to work on the sweater (and forget homework) for a while. I'm officially addicted to top-down sweaters now...no more piecing together for me! I'm entering it in the Jackson County fair to see how it does. I've never entered anything in a fair before...who knows...maybe I'll get a ribbon of some sort! :) I posted the second picture because I also learned to do a "mock cable" stitch, which I REALLY like. I carry this purse around every day...I love it! And almost everywhere I go, people ask me if I made it...What a great feeling! :)

No time....

As I sit here trying to read homework, I'm looking longingly at my knitting needles and spinning wheel. I've got a cotton summer-weight shirt on my circs and started spinning some chocolate-colored Rambouillet wool on my wheel a couple of weeks ago....It's nearly ready to ply. But this >#@*#!* homework has to be done before I can even think about my wonderful projects. It's maddening!

Dani, I've not forgotten about putting a link to Knitty Paws on here...I just haven't had time to work on it. I will try again soon. To everyone who is reading my blog...stay tuned! I was able to finish a wonderful new purse, which I have taken pictures of "before" felting, but not "after" yet. I'm carrying it around...so it's just a matter of having time to take pictures and get them uploaded. I also went to Sheep Street Fibers and bought a fleece, and then took it to Fleece Fair and sent it with Zeilinger's to be made into roving. So soon I will have tons of roving to spin...if I can just find the time! I have some new patterns, as well as a "Knitting from the top down" DVD, so I'm dying to work on some new projects!

My spinning efforts

The yarn on the bottom is the 4th skein I made, compared to the one on the top, which is the 2nd skein I made. Last week I was elected President of our local Emergency Nurses Association. So....lots to do...little time to knit! :( I also have a new hobby...spinning! My loving hubby bought me a spinning wheel for Christmas, and then bought me a double-treadle kit for my birthday. Here's a picture. It's an Ashford Traveller, and it came all the way from New Zealand. It's used, but it's in great shape, and I got a wonderful deal on it! :) The bags lying around it contain various fiber...alpaca, romney sheep's wool, rambouillet sheep's wool, etc. The folks at SheepStreet tell me that my wheel is an early 1970's version of the Traveller - so it's nearly as old as I am!

My other project "in the works"

In addition to knitting away my every spare moment (ok...and a few I should be spending on studying & housework!), I'm also learning how to spin my own yarn. It's one of my favorites so far. It's not the warmest, but it's very beautiful. It's made with two yarns held together. Berroco's Glace and Plymouth's EROS. There is another yarn that I used at the bottom to finish off the stitches (a crocheted border to bind of the knitted stitches, but I can't find the label for it right now.
